Serums 101 featuring Estee Lauder, Lancome, Vichy and Clarins

Posted : 23rd April 2012

Lately i find that there are two products that are difficult to explain to a person: serums and primers (full post here). I don’t mean here the savvy bloggers who are up to date with all the latest innovations, but the general public. Ladies get confused when to apply them, where, why or are concerned about layering products.

What is a serum? A serum its a potent, high concentrated skincare product meant to tackle one or few problem areas. Usually it is focused on one active ingredient (eg retinol) and on one skin imperfection (pores, aging, pigmentation etc).

Consistency wise, a serum will have a thin consistency so it can be absorbed in the skin fast. Regardless the brand, always follow up with a moisturiser. A serum will not protect the skin, hydrate, have SPF or other benefits a moisturiser will posses.

Yes, you can layer your skincare and makeup products without problems. For example, apply serum, moisturiser, primer, foundation and so on, you will not be building inches of products if you use the instructions accordingly (which ive noticed nobody reads the packaging anymore).

A serum will always be a little pricier due the technology and ingredients behind it, but bare in mind that it lasts ages too (in average about 3-4 months). Only a little is needed, don’t make the mistake to drown yourself in it.

Always give time for a product to work, especially the ones for pigmentation. If its taken years for a spot to form (the sun damage shows on the skin in 10 years time from when it was produced), it will take more then 4 weeks for a product to work.

So here are some points about the serums Ive tried and liked over time:

Estee Lauder

Idealist – one of the most popular serum amongst the people with oily skin. It is targeted to smooth out the skin and minimize the pores by 30%. This is my second bottle, yes it does visibly minimize the pores but when you stop, everything goes back to normal. More a quick fix and even makeup primer, rather then treatment. Best to be used in the morning, for all ages.

Advanced Night Repair – im currently using this at night time, its a recovery – regenerant serum suitable for all ages. Its meant to boost the skin’s capacity to heal itself. I find the texture a bit sticky for my liking and im not a fan of the scent (a bit herbal), had high hopes but didn’t noticed major results yet (after 4 weeks), will give it more time.

Idealist Illuminator- the latest serum on the market from EL, it boost radiance and evens out the skin tone. Haven’t used this one yet, have a few pigmentation spots on my cheekbones and i am very curious to see if it delivers.

Lancome – The Super Serums Vissionaire and Genefique

The only Super Serums on the market, Genefique Youth Activator will boost the youth proteins in your skin during the morning and adds tons of radiance and smoothness, whilst Visionnaire Advanced Skin Corrector will treat the visible signs of aging (wrinkles, pores, pigmentation) during the night. Very efficient and you will see results in 7 days (Genefique). Always come back to them.

Vichy

Liftactiv Serum 10 – having an active ingredient like Retinol, makes this serum a very efficient anti-age product. I loved using it during the night, it immediately plumped my skin and smoothed it out. Has a slightly richer texture, which makes it loved even by the dryest of complexions. Great for a budget brand (RRP. €35) and targeted for the 30+ women. I enjoyed using it during the night (the bottle in the picture is empty, kept it for blogging), but it can be used morning or/and evening.

Aqualia Thermal – this serum is like a bath for your skin! Rich in soothing thermal water, this will add hydration and strength to the sensitive skin. I have a very long relationship with this serum, its my summer holiday must!

Also, check out the La Roche Posay Dermaox serum – a fabulous radiance booster based on Vitamin C.

Clarins

Im struggling at the moment to finish this one out, this is a skin renewal serum meant to combat fine lines. I say that im struggling, simply because is too rich on my skin and i have to wait a couple of minutes before im applying the moisturiser. Very fragranced, haven’t noticed yet a dramatic improvement and im suspecting this is braking me out. Ill give it more time to see what’s happening.

Thank you for reading and please let me know what other serums i should try, im a little obsessed with skincare :) .

Pucker up with Clarins Gloss Prodige

Posted : 21st April 2012

Seems like i’ve only done lipstick posts lately, so decided to show my lip glosses some love too.

The new glosses from Clarins have really hit the jackpot: lots of pigment, long lasting and yet not very sticky. There is no need for lipstick underneath, maybe a touch of lip liner to add more definition.

Gloss Prodige in Papaya – mild coral, peachy shade. It looks a lot brighter and uniform on the lips then in the photos.

Gloss Prodige in Grenadine – bright coral-pink, bordering on fuchsia.

RRP. €17.80.

MWAH!

Belfast Haul

Posted : 20th April 2012

We went to Belfast on Monday to have a browse in the shops and finally go to the blogospere famous Junction 1 outlet. We had a fabulous day, himself got so many nice things in Topman (a lot cheaper in the North then in Dublin) and i picked some bits too, mainly in the Outlet.

Ojon Daily Hydrating Shampoo, Conditioner and Mask (474ml x 2, plus the mask only £33)

Have already used the shampoo and conditioner twice and im really impressed with them. Very moisturising without feeling heavy, i mean my hair is detangled and feels bouncy without spending hours of brushing. Haven’t used the mask yet, it will be a weekend affair. Ill do a more in-dept review after using the products for longer.

Also there is a great offer on Ojon products at the moment: buy £20 worth of stuff and get for free  full size volumising shampoo and conditioner plus free shipping. Haven’t come across such a good offer in ages! Link

Asda Toffee Dry Shimmery Body Oil £1

Candy scented, gorgeous sheen and gold particles?! For £1?! Should’ve gotten two.

Got some basics from Zara Trf: a pair of blue distressed skinny’s and two organic cotton t-shirts in yummy summer colours. Oh and these wedges:

Been lusting after these burnt orange wedges for ages, seen them first on Vivianna’s blog in black and then fell in love with the orange ones. Because i’ve become obsessed with coral lately, i accumulated a fair amount of bright coral pieces of clothing so these babies are the final piece of the puzzle.

And my favorite shopping item: Nike runners from the Factory Outlet (were £50, got them for £35).

I’m absolutely in love with them! They are not bulky, black and so, so light. I’m never going to get them off haha!

Hope ill manage to do an OOTD, honestly those posts are so hard to do…im an awful body poser :) .

I bought a hat

Posted : 19th April 2012

Lipstick Lancome Rouge in Love 146B, Nails Lancome Rouge in Love 105M, Hat H&M (current season).

I’m on holiday at the moment and although its freezing outside, felt the need to buy a hat. I have such a small head that makes choosing a hat a very difficult experience, so when i tried this one in H&M knew its my only chance to own one.

I feel i will get lots of use from it this summer, its light and cream so it will match with everything. Also it will be a life saver when you are reading on a beach, on summer holidays.

Would love a big floppy hat too, but all the ones i tried covered my whole head and face. Couldn’t even see haha!

PS. Sorry for looking so smug in the pictures, its just the holiday glow :) .

Veet Easy Wax Electrical Roll-On Kit

Posted : 11th April 2012

When it comes to de-fuzz my legs, there’s no brainer for me: grab the blade and be silky smooth in minutes. I dislike the whole process of going to a salon, letting your leg hair grow for ages while feeling like a little monkey and hoping no one will raise your trouser.

But after reading glowing reviews on Beaut.ie about the new Veet Roll On kit, ive decided to let my hair down (ha!) and give it a go.

What you get:

- the Veet self heating device with a base and electrical cable

- roll-on wax refill for legs and arms

- 12 removing strips

- 4 post depilatory wipes

How you do it:

Its extremely easy to use and assemble: you just insert the wax cartridge in the device, plug it in and wait for 20 minutes. I’ve left it longer then that, maybe 30-35 minutes as i found the wax takes a bit longer to get to a fluid consistence.

Apply the wax on the leg in light layers and use the strips to pull the hair. Didn’t really believe the reviews that its gonna be painless, but oh my lord it blew my socks away! No pain, ok maybe a mild discomfort but nothing compared to an epilator for example.

A few observations:

  • Like everybody else reviewing this product, ive got one complaint: the 12 removing strips are not enough for both legs, never mind for further applications. Ive got skinny pins and still managed to use about 10 on just one leg (waxed only up to the knee). I had to get dressed and go to the shop to buy some more strips (€3.99) to finish it off.
  • Tried to cut them in half to make them go further but its more hassle as you cant get a long chunk of it.
  • I would advise to reheat the wax for about 10 minutes before you move to the next leg/arm.

I found the roll on extremely easy to use on the lower legs, but don’t really see myself using it for other parts. Im just too clumsy and i wouldn’t have the strength to hold a position and pull at the same time.

So that makes me think of the diy vs salon costs: the starter kit is €37.49 (currently €18 in Tesco and Dunnes) plus you will need extra removing strips – another €3.99. If you would go to a professional, it probably would cost about €50 for a full leg.

Im still debating which alternative is better… I mean for a holiday i would go for sure to have it all done professionally and forget about all the hassle. But again, for day to day life its more convenient to do it in the comfort of your own home.

The jury is still out on this one, how did you find the product yourselves?

Lancome Rouge In Love 159B

Posted : 10th April 2012

Something changed when i hit 28 this year. All of the sudden had the urge to use bright lipsticks and go for a more polished, lady like look. Of course, pictures of the ever so gorgeous girls from VivaAdonis and ArtDonatella encouraged me to take the plunge and experiment for once with myself, not just others.

The new Rouge in Love collection from Lancome, is right up my street: a gorgeous selection of lipsticks and nail colors, varying from light nudes to provocative reds. The shades are divided in three category for different type of events: Jolis Matin (day to day, casual nudes), Boudoir Time (brighter, bolder shades perfect for a cocktail with the girls) and Tonight is My Night (intense, going out, flirty colors).

The texture is long lasting, comfortable and bursting with pigment. Initially it leaves a lovely shine on the lips, while settling for a matte finish after a while. It claims to last 6 hours and i can totally vouch for that, it lasts for ever whilst remaining comfortable.

Behold Rouge In Love 159B from the Boudoir selection:

No gloss was applied, this is the pure color straight from the tube.

RRP. €25

Next on my list is a bright coral!

DIY Ombre Hair

Posted : 8th April 2012

Really i shouldn’t be left with too much time on my hand. I mean three whole days off in a row?! I’m bound to do something naughty :) .

This time it involved a box of hair bleach.

Wanted the ombre hair for a very long time, i even went to a proper salon to get it done (balyage) but left completely disappointed. Got the deal from Groupon for Revive hair salon, which is very close to where i live. It turned out to be a very bad choice, the staff wasn’t very friendly and the results unsatisfactory. Had a consultation before hand and a patch test to establish what i want, all went well so when i went for the real deal, was very surprised to be told that my hair is very dark and couldn’t possibly do much on it. I mean, you could’ve told me this at the consultation!

Anyway, today i took matters in my own hands and these are the results:

NB. My ends are not damaged at all, its frizzy because is still wet. I’m going to let my hair air dry to prevent more damage.

How i did it?

1. got a box of Wella Hair Streaking Kit (blue box, old fashioned photo on display).

2. painted the ends of my hair with the mixture, using a brush.

3. covered the strands in aluminum foil, heated with the hair dryer.

4. left it for aprox 30 min. I checked it several times during the process, i advise to do so.

5. washed and repeated for a second time, skipping the foil part. Left it for aprox 20 min.

6. washed and conditioned heavily. Left to air dry in a bun, hence is curly and frizzy :) .

That’s it! I should’ve done this from the start, it would’ve saved me €100 :( . I will top it up in a few weeks time, but i want to leave my hair recover.

I am not a hairdresser by any means, i advice everyone to do a patch test first to check for any sensitivity. If you have very dark hair, be very cautions as it can turn orange.
