The most fun project: The Ikea Duktig Play Kitchen Upcycle Makeover!
Finally, a Before and After IKEA DUKTIG Play Kitchen Upcycle Makeover! I had planned on up cycling Sophia’s kitchen since Santa brought it last Christmas. It was in dire need of a makeover, with its yellowish wood tinge and boring white doors. Fast forward almost a year later, i was finally ready to get to work. I kept thinking about color schemes and in the end i went with a pink and grey combination with gold accents.
The Before
What Have I Used for the Up Cycle
Rust Oleum Surface Primer in White
Rust Oleum Mettalic Elegant Finish in Gold
Rust Oleum Universal All Surface Paint in Slate Grey
Rust Oleum Painters Touch in Candy Pink
Two medium sized brushes and two small watercolor brushes
Three white ball knobs
Marble vinyl contact self adhesive paper (from Amazon)
I got everything in my local Homebase, i always loved working with Rust Oleum products they are never disappointing. I went for small sizes and im glad i did, i still have loads left for other projects.
The surface primer was used on the plastic handles, legs, sink and tap in preparation for the metallic gold spray. I didn’t need to prime the wood or doors as the paint already had a primer included in the mix. I also went for a glossy finish as its easier to clean.
With the paint i only needed one coat for the Grey and two for the pink. I completed the project in two days as i wanted to leave enough drying time. The most challenging has been spraying the tap and handles gold, the shapes were awkward to let dry and i constantly made a mess with them. I got there in the end though!
I used vinyl marble contact paper that i got from Amazon for the kitchen top. I have a good experience with it – used it on my bar cart diy as well (see here). I figured its easy to wipe clean and if i have too, i can replace it without too much fuss.
Initially i had the ball knobs spray painted gold, but i really messed up and decided to leave them plain. Im actually glad i did, i really love them like this.
The After
Sophia Loves It!
I decided not to spray paint the pans and pots as i often have to give them a good wash. I am so looking forward in getting Sophia some lovely tableware and crockery to fill it up!

Your play kitchen upgrade is fab! I’ve been planning on doing the same thing but probably wob’t Have time now until next summer with studying for my post grad. Can you let us know how the painted surfaces hold up?
Aileen.
