I have had alopecia areata since I was six and last winter I lost nearly half of my hair in my worst flare-up in years. This time it was the first thing I got really diligent with and I still use it today to maintain my results.

The Currentbody LED helmet is the easiest hair treatment I have ever stuck to. It is painless, hands-free and takes just 10 minutes a day. It is not a miracle and it is not cheap, but it earned its place in the routine that got my hair back.

A quick note before we start: I am not a doctor. I have 16+ years in the beauty industry and a lifetime of living with hair loss and this is my personal experience.
The Currentbody LED Hair Growth Helmet is made for androgenetic alopecia, the medical name for male and female pattern hair loss. Its FDA clearance in the US covers this type only, which means gradual thinning at the crown, parting or hairline in men and women. The brand’s own 12-week trial was on adults aged 18 to 55 with general hair loss and thinning and it does not say what caused their hair loss. So if you have pattern thinning, you are exactly who this helmet was designed for. If you have alopecia areata like me, you are can decide if to give it a go based on my personal experience.
What is the Currentbody LED Hair Growth Helmet?
It is an at-home red light therapy device for hair growth. You wear it like a helmet and it shines red light over your whole scalp.
- Light: red light at 620 to 660nm
- LEDs: 120, spread across the full scalp
- Treatment time: 10 minutes a day
- Extras: built-in Bluetooth headphones and two sizes. I personally use the Medium size and it fits both me and my husband.
Red light therapy is thought to boost blood flow to the scalp, give the follicle cells more energy and help calm inflammation. The aim is to keep more hairs in the growth phase for longer.
In CurrentBody’s own 12-week trial, people with hair loss and thinning used the helmet daily. The brand reports 128% more hair growth, 72% less hair loss and 26% better hair density. These are the brand’s figures and the trial looked at general thinning.
My Alopecia Areata story
I was six when my first bald patch appeared. Since then, alopecia areata has come and gone for most of my life, so hair loss is not new to me. Luckily in my adulthood the bald patches have always been at the back of my head, buried deep into my hair. So could be concealed easily.
Last winter was different. It was the biggest flare-up I have had in years and I lost nearly half of my hair. Luckily I have a lot of hair to begin with, but watching it come out in handfuls is frightening no matter how many times you have been through it. The back of my head and hairline were the most affected.
Alopecia areata is linked to inflammation around the hair follicle. That is why I went straight back to my CurrentBody LED helmet. I have had it for years and i always get diligent with my treatment once i get a flare up. Once the ‘danger’ has passed i still continue to use it a couple times a week to maintain. It doesn’t require any effort and its a very easy routine to get into.
How I use the CurrentBody LED helmet
- How often: 10 minutes a day, at least 5 times a week.
- When: i share it with my husband, in our office. So when i sit at my desk, whilst i write my emails i will pop it on.
- Scalp: clean and dry, with my scalp serums applied afterwards. Products applied before the LED Helmet may obstruct the LED light to penetrate the skin. Also make sure your hair isn’t super dirty with buildup of dry shampoo etc.
There is no heat, no pain and no mess. I put it on, press the button and get on with my work.
CurrentBody LED Hair Growth Helmet before and after results
Here is how my Currentbody LED helmet results looked over time:
- Weeks 1 to 4: No visible change yet, however the scalp felt calmer and less inflamed. My hair was sitting better.
- Weeks 4 to 8: Noticeable less shedding, first fine baby hairs in patches. They were initially white so hard to notice but i did invest in a hair microscope and my scalp was filling up nicely. Im nothing but dedicated!
- Weeks 8 to 16: Patches were filling in, in particular around the hairline and back of my head. New hairs were getting thicker.
- Today: My hair has grown back fully and I still use the helmet 5 times a week to maintain it. It’s obviously not the same length as the rest of my head, so i do look a bit messy. Nothing a slick-back can’t handle.
I want to be honest about two things. Alopecia Areata can regrow on its own and I used the helmet alongside other over the counter topical treatments. I didn’t use any form of Minoxidil on my scalp. What I can say is, that it was the step I never skipped and my hair came back faster than after past flare-ups. The inflammation has been reduced nearly instantly. I don’t know if this happens to other people with AA – but during flareups my scalp can be very itchy. That sensation went away during the first 4 weeks of the LED treatment.
Pros and cons
What I love
- Hands-free and only 10 minutes.
- Painless, with no downtime.
- Covers the whole scalp, not just one area.
- Built-in headphones, so I can listen to a podcast while it works.
- Easy to use alongside serums and supplements.
- It can be shared with other members of the family – my husband is a big fan.
- Strong research on red light for pattern thinning hair loss.
What to know before you buy
- It is an investment, at around €739.99 before the discount. Code LEDANDREEA gives 10% off, bringing the total to €666.
- You need to be consistent, as skipping days slows your results.
