Pardon the pun, retinol is the ‘it’ ingredient to have in the your skincare routine at the moment. So there’s no surprise that It Cosmetics has jumped on the bandwagon. They have formulated a serum in cream night cream, using innovative packaging to deliver visible results.

I was listening to the IT Cosmetics founder Jamie Kern Lima on a podcast where she was talking about her story creating the brand. She couldn’t find products that solved her beauty concerns. Mainly sparse brows and redness, so she partnered with plastic surgeons and dermatologists to create them. And an empire was born! She later on became a billionaire after selling It Cosmetics to the L’Oreal group. A fascinating story of empowerment, hard work and determination.

Why using retinol into your skincare routine?

You are probably wondering why should you look into incorporating retinol into your routine. Retinol is not just a trend or a hyped ingredient, its a proven way of supercharging your routine and rejuvenating your skin. It kick starts cell turnover, accelerating the process of shedding dull, dry skin and uneven texture. Revealing naturally radiant, smooth skin.

However, it’s a powerful ingredient. It can dry out your skin or cause irritation if you don’t use it correctly. It is meant to be worked into the routine gradually, training the skin to develop a tolerance to it. So for instance, a complete novice should use retinol once a week for two weeks. Build up to twice a week for a while, until daily application is tolerated.

Also, retinol concentration is an important factor too. Most brands will have percentages displayed to show the strength of the retinol in the formulation. 0.1% to 0.3% are considered entry levels. 0.5% medium strength. 1%-2% its left for retinol veterans who can tolerate it well.

The risk of someone who hasn’t used retinol before jumping into a high strength concentration is that most likely they will experience dryness, redness and sensitivity as a side effect. Which is why its so important to train your skin gradually. Results will start showing even with low concentrations.

Always use a high sun factor protection daily when using retinol products. It makes the skin more susceptible to sun damage and sun burns.

During the call with the It Cosmetics team, where we were introduced to the new moisturizer, i was interested to find out what was the retinol concentration. However, the brand has actually decided to not disclose it. Which personally makes me believe that it is in the 0.1% or under level of concentration. So still a visibly effective product, particularly to a complete novice. But a lot more gentle and without major side effects.
